Rio Grande is an industrial and worker city. The traces left by the presence of several types of industries, over time, built the city of Rio Grande we know now: its geographic distribution, population, culture, diversity and landscape. All these traces, directly or indirectly related to the local industrial past (and present), make up the industrial heritage of Rio Grande. The material goods, the knowledge, the technologies, the gatherings, the strikes and the union movements are what make up the industrial history of the city.

When we walk around Rio Grande, we are surrounded by traces, even if many times they pass us by. The presence of these factories influenced the way of living and moving within the city. We get to know families, friends, neighbors, colleagues who worked for many years in one or more local factories, and who intertwine their lives with the factories, the machines, the chimneys, the whistles, the times.

Taking into consideration this characteristic and the lack of an inventory and a general mapping of the history of the industrial heritage of Rio Grande, we have developed this project.

If you want to know more about industrial heritage, we put the definition of Industrial Heritage used by the Brazilian Committee for the Preservation of Industrial Heritage (TICCIH – Brazil) below:

“Industrial heritage comprehends traces of industrial culture that have some historical, technological, social, architectonic or scientific value. These traces comprise buildings and machinery, workshops, factories, mines and processing and refining spaces, warehouses and depositories, power plants, means of transportation and all its structure and infrastructure, as well as the places where social activities concerning the industry were developed, such as housing, religion and education spaces.” (LETTER BY NIZHNY TAGIL ON INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE, 2003, our translation)
